Geneanet.org is FREE unless you want to use their special search refinements. Since the developers of this site are French, the English version is a translation from French. Unfortunately some of the site usage instructions were translated wrong or are confusing. The search interface and results are not very intuitive to use. However, a news post in 2004 indicated an index of 350 million names so you might want to give the site a try.
