Maps and Gazetteers Research Tip
Common migration roots may appear in historical maps and can help you to determine the migration paths
of your ancestors. Another good reference and finding aid is a gazetteer. A gazetteer is a geographical
index that lists and describes towns, counties, and water ways. It contains maps and the locations of
the towns and also other significant land marks. A gazetteer might also include historical statistics
and descriptions of governmental centers, such as the names of the capitals, and county seats.
